What Does EMOM Mean?

EMOM stands for Every Minute on the Minute. So EMOM 12min means: every minute on the minute for 12 minutes, do a certain exercises. For this protocol, you rest the remainder of the minute after your task is completed. We can use just a single exercise, we can alternate exercises, or we can even do a rotation of several exercises.

What’s So Great About EMOM?

Putting exercises or groups of exercises into EMOM workouts has several advantages. Firstly, it allows us to work on the more complicated CrossFit movements under duress, yet still maintain proper form. If you’re relatively new to power cleans, it’s not a good idea to do a lot of them within a bunch of other movements. Although you may still be lifting the weight, you’re probably not really doing power cleans, but rather back-heaving reverse-curls. Using EMOM workouts, we can still include the power clean for conditioning, but within a controlled environment that allows proper execution. And the power clean is just and example, CrossFit has many complicated movements that require both skill and strength like the overhead squat, snatch, muscle up etc.

EMOM workouts are also highly effective for people who are very powerful but have trouble pacing. You’ll only have 30-45sec between movements, but the work is broken up into manageable chunks. While it may seem strange to you endurance people out there, the powerful people in the crowd know that they are still very challenged by the EMOM workouts.

So, if you’re a powerful person that can lift a lot but always gets way tired during conditioning, the EMOM workouts are your friend. Also, if you want to be able excel in the higher skill CrossFit workouts, the EMOM workouts will help you practice.
